Warrant: Elgin woman tried to run down estranged husband 7 times

An Elgin woman hit her estranged husband with her sport utility vehicle, throwing him onto the hood, and tried to hit him seven more times in a four-minute span before fleeing from police and plunging into the Fox River, according to a search warrant for her vehicle's black box recorder.

Micaela Salcedo, 40, of the 500 block of South Street, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and other felonies in connection to the Feb. 3 attack, which resulted in her Jeep careening down an embankment and into the river near National Street.

Salcedo has been held at the Kane County jail since her arrest, and a judge will hear a request Friday to reduce her bail from $750,000.

Elgin police obtained a search warrant to extract data from the SUV's Event Data Recorder. In the warrant's affidavit, police said a surveillance video showed Salcedo trying to hit him repeatedly.

Salcedo's husband, Francisco, had asked for a divorce and rented a room in Elgin while she stayed at the couple's home with their two children, the affidavit said.

Francisco was trying to get paperwork, such as W-2 forms and pay stubs, from Salcedo, and they agreed to meet at the casino to have coffee, according to the affidavit. Francisco suggested they leave the casino and talk in the parking lot after Salcedo raised her voice, the affidavit said. She asked him to sit in the Jeep, which he did for a brief time, but decided to get out after she refused to give him the paperwork.

To access his car Francisco walked in front of the Jeep and he heard the engine rev, according to the affidavit.

"As he turned his head, the next thing he saw was headlights and felt the impact of the vehicle hit his body. (He) was struck by the vehicle, carried on the hood of the vehicle, and when Micaela Salcedo struck Francisco's parked vehicle, (he) was thrown from the vehicle due to the impact of the crash," Elgin police said in the affidavit.

"Micaela Salcedo continued to try to chase Francisco down in the parking lot, striking two other parked cars, causing severe damage to both. When the police arrived, Micaela attempted to flee and ended up driving the vehicle into the Fox River," the affidavit continued, noting the lot's landscaping also was damaged.

Elgin Fire Department divers launched a boat to pull her from the SUV, and she and her husband were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A message left with attorney Brandon McNulty was not immediately returned.

If convicted, Salcedo faces up to 30 years in prison.
