District 211 incumbents have the right idea

Why should I care about the District 211 school board election? My youngest child graduated from Fremd High School almost eight years ago; I've moved on to other things.

I didn't want to pay attention. But then I attended a candidates' forum at Conant High School.

The challengers say they're interested in providing the same quality education students have now for less money and that the district is holding too much money in reserve. Easy to say when you aren't experienced in district finances.

What they're really running on is the hot button issue of transgender rights. To be blunt, they are against them.

I didn't want to pay attention to this election. But then I saw the movie "Hidden Figures." One of the many ways the black women faced discrimination was being relegated to the inconvenient "Colored Only" bathroom. At NASA. In the 1960s.

The challengers would try to take our high schools back to the 1960s, with separate but not equal bathrooms and locker rooms for trans kids.

I didn't want to pay attention to this election. But then I started reading, watching and listening to reporting on transgender issues.

The high suicide rate, the number of violent incidents against and verbal abuse leveled at transgender youth are a disgrace. Why would any child choose to be trans? It isn't a choice, about 1 percent of the population is born transgender.

I didn't want to pay attention to this election. But I listened to board members Bob LeFevre, Anna Klimkowicz, and Ed Yung. They support District 211 in its longtime practice of treating all students with respect. They have worked diligently to build reserves, pay down debt and maintain the district's healthy financial standing.

I believe they will continue District 211's great tradition of doing what is best for each student.
