U-46 candidates who meet the criteria

I am a child of teachers and a grandchild of teachers; a product of a "free and public education." The welfare of our public school system was often a topic at dinner tables and family gatherings. Four generations of teachers preceded me.

Because of my deep love of public education, I have a great concern for the U-46 school board elections in April. Horace Mann, the father of public education, believed schools should bring all social classes together. Embrace children from a variety of backgrounds. Provide a common learning experience for all.

U-46 is now a school district where minority students are a majority. Recent board discussions have been contentious, especially around issues of equity for all students, tolerance training for teachers, and the necessity for understanding the culture and background of all students.

Because U-46 has a diverse student population, it is paramount that Board members are dedicated to the needs of all students in the district. It is vital that all board members have some experience in the public schools: as a parent, a student, or a minority member of the community. I believe Melissa Owens, Veronica Noland and Donna Smith best meet these criteria.

Please vote this year. Your vote is vital in this important election.
