Family dog killed in Lake Zurich house fire

A family dog was killed Sunday in a fire that left a Lake Zurich home uninhabitable, officials said.

A homeowner and his family were returning to their residence in the 500 block of Richmond Circle when he discovered the blaze and called 911, according to the Lake Zurich Fire Department.

Fire crews arrived about 11:42 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the front of the two-story house. The fire was located in the basement and was under control by 12:02 p.m., fire officials said.

The homeowner was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after trying to rescue the family's pets, Chief John Malcolm said. He was able to find and remove one dog from the house, but the dog did not survive.

Firefighters were able to rescue a second dog, who was treated at the scene and taken to a Buffalo Grove veterinary clinic for further evaluation, Malcolm said.

Officials are estimating the fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the house, he said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

No residents or firefighters were injured.
