Woman found dead in house fire near Bensenville

A woman was found dead Friday morning inside her burning house near Bensenville.

Bensenville Fire Chief Mike Spain said the woman, believed to be in her 90s, lived alone on the 4N300 block of Church Road. The woman has not yet been publicly identified by officials.

The woman's adult son found her about 8:30 a.m. Friday when he stopped at the house to check on his mom.

When the son opened the door, he discovered the house was filled with heavy black smoke. His mother was found dead in the kitchen where the fire apparently started.

"At this point, it's still under investigation on what happened," Spain said.

The DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force is probing the cause of the fire. Spain said there's no indication of foul play, and the fire wasn't an arson.

Spain said the blaze was going for "a while" before firefighters arrived. When crews got to the scene, the fire was quickly extinguished.

Church Road was closed at Red Oak Avenue and White Pine Road for most of the day.
