Des Plaines American Legion helping fallen vets get grave medallions

For many years the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has offered a medallion to mark the grave of a veteran buried in a private cemetery.

Until recently, they were only available for veterans who died on or after Nov. 1, 1990. The American Legion submitted a resolution changing this regulation, which was approved.

As a result, any veteran buried at a private cemetery who has a privately purchased headstone or grave marker can get this medallion at no cost.

The veteran is entitled to either a government-furnished headstone or marker or the new medallion, but not both.

Applications for the markers are available from Des Plaines American Legion Post 36 at 1291 Oakwood Ave, or call (847) 824-3236 for more information.
