Dist. 200 should go back to drawing board
We have lived in Wheaton for nearly 25 years and have supported each referendum posed by Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200. However, not this one.
We understand the importance of having well maintained facilities for a proper learning environment, and good schools keep residential values high. However, asking the taxpayers to pay for the replacement of capital projects in a referendum shows poor planning on the district's part.
The district should have been reserving for many years for the replacement of things like roofs and boilers, and not asking for these funds in what amounts to a special assessment. The concept of reserve funding, and formulas calculating the funding have been around for a very long time, and is an essential part of a developing a proper budget. Condominium associations have been doing this for years.
In addition, throwing in the last failed referendum for Jefferson school on top of this forces people to vote for two different issues in one referendum.
We hope the board goes back and sharpens their pencils to incorporate proper reserve funding.
