Would-be robber flees Waukegan bank after showing gun

A would-be bank robber had a last-minute change of heart Tuesday, fleeing a Waukegan bank shortly after showing a handgun and demanding money, police said.

According to Waukegan police, officers were called to Associated Bank, located at 1 S. Genesee St., at about 9:30 a.m. on a report of an attempted armed robbery.

An employee told officers a man entered the bank and demanded money, but left before receiving anything, police said. The suspect is described as a black man in his 40s or 50s, with a graying beard, standing between 5 feet, 8 inches and 6 feet, with a slim build. He was wearing sunglasses, a skully-style hat and a trenchcoat.

The Waukegan Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is working with the FBI on the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Waukegan Police Department's Tip-Line at (847) 360-9001.
