Villa Park deserves a great library

A great library is an asset to a community and enhances it tremendously. The library is a place to go to relax in quiet and read, do research or homework, use technological sources or find that book you've been seeking. A great library will increase property values and improve the quality of life for the community.

The Villa Park Library was built in 1969. Modifications were made in 1996 but no major renovations have taken place for 47 years. Major renovations and modernization are needed to make the building safer and to improve building access and resources to the community.

Some improvements include: replacement and modernization of major systems - many systems are interconnected so it makes sense to update all systems at once to decrease the work and expense; the boiler and roof need to be replaced immediately; and many areas of the building are not up to building, ADA and safety codes. The fire protection system needs replacement - currently no sprinkler system exists. An elevator is needed to improve accessibility for emergency personnel to handle emergencies on the second floor. The water pipes and electrical systems require replacement.

The total cost of the project is $10.6 million. It would be paid for by a 20-year bond issue. If a person's home is valued at $200,000, then he would find the library portion of his tax bill increase by $89.79 per year.

Passing the referendum will allow for improvements that will address traffic flow, parking issues, increase space, technology offerings, allow additional hours of operation, allow staff to increase services/classes. A high-quality library is a draw to bringing people into the community.

This is why I'm voting yes on April 4. Villa Park deserves a great library.
