Former nursing home near Island Lake damaged by fire

A late-night fire badly damaged a former nursing home building near Island Lake, authorities said Tuesday.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which was reported about 11:30 p.m. Monday, at what once was the Sheltering Oak nursing home on the 27000 block of Beech Street.

Crews from Wonder Lake, Round Lake, McHenry, Barrington Countryside, Lake Zurich, Crystal Lake, Long Grove, Fox Lake and other departments assisted the Wauconda Fire District on the scene.

Firefighters got the blaze under control about 2 a.m. They remained on the scene until about 4 a.m.

The Wauconda Fire District is investigating the blaze.

Sheltering Oak closed in 2012. The building and grounds have since fallen into disrepair. Last year, a developer proposed razing the building and putting up apartments.
