U-46 to host annual career fair

Elgin Area School District U-46's Advancement Via Individual Determination program will host its fourth annual College and Career Fair Thursday, March 16.

The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin.

Students from U-46 and other local high schools can meet and talk with representatives from more than 50 educational institutions, including North Central College, University of Iowa, Western State Colorado University, and Indiana State University.

AVID is a college and career preparation program for students in seventh through 12th grades. District U-46 houses the AVID program at its eight middle schools and five high schools to help guide and prepare students for success in postsecondary education.

The district's transportation department will help U-46 students get to and from the fair.

Bartlett High winners:

Bartlett High School's Technology Student Association team took first place at a recent state competition after students earned many solo medals.

During the Illinois Technology Student Association State Conference in February, 30 Bartlett High students earned 40 medals in 17 out of 19 events. The students' successful performance earned the team first place for the first and second levels of the competition - a first in the school's history at the state conference.

The first level represents the seventh- through ninth-grade competition and the second level represents the 10th- through 12th-grade competition.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to give students the chance to put their technology knowledge to the test," said Candace Quetsch, Bartlett High math teacher and association adviser. "The students exercise real-world career skills during this annual competition."

Students take what they have built or researched and present it to a group of professionals from throughout the state. Most of the conference events focus on engineering concepts and skills.

Some, including Dragster Design, Marine Challenge, Structural Engineering and Architectural Model, required students to build something and bring it to the competition.

Students also were tested on technology-related topics including the "Creed event," which requires students to recite the Technology Student Association Creed from memory.
