Woman hurt, cats killed in Island Lake fire

An Island Lake woman was hurt and two cats were killed Monday morning in an apartment fire.

The blaze was reported about 10 a.m. in an apartment building on the 4000 block of Roberts Road. The resident came home to discover her water cooler was on fire, authorities said.

The fire was out by the time Wauconda Fire District firefighters arrived, but the second-floor apartment was filled with smoke, authorities said.

The woman was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Barrington with minor smoke inhalation.

A third cat survived and was given oxygen by firefighters. A relative of the victim took the cat to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

The fire was contained to the apartment. Its cause was under investigation Monday.
