Train strikes, kills pedestrian in Elgin

Outbound Metra trains on the Milwaukee District West Line were stopped during Monday evening's commute after a train struck and killed a pedestrian in Elgin, Metra officials said.

Train No. 2237 scheduled to arrive at Big Timber Road at 6:29 p.m. struck the pedestrian near Route 31 and Wing Street shortly after leaving the Elgin station at 6:20 p.m., Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

There is no pedestrian crossing nearby, she said.

Trains were stopped for about 45 minutes while emergency responders investigated. Outbound trains began moving again on the second tracks within an hour, Reile said.

"We did have delays, but we were able to get people moving again and get home," she said. "(We'll) still have a few delays (throughout the evening)."

No further information about the pedestrian was available Monday evening.
