Glenview man accused of illegal debt collection

A 46-year-old Glenview man is facing criminal charges after being accused of running an illegal debt collection service.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced the criminal contempt charges against Nelson Macwan Friday. In a news release, Madigan said Macwan violated a 2015 judicial order banning him from operating debt collection services in the state.

Macwan was prohibited from running debt collection businesses after Madigan sued him in 2012 for running a similar operation called PN Financial. Madigan charged him anew after authorities discovered he was illegally operating a new company called New Britain Financial LLC that was the subject of more than 100 consumer complaints across the country.

While engaged in the illegal operation, Macwan deposited more than $1.8 million into business bank accounts, Madigan said.

Macwan faces more than six months in prison and a fine of more than $500 if convicted.

Macwan was arraigned Friday and his bond was set at $400,000. His next court date is slated for May 11.
