Three arrested after anti-theft device disables stolen car

Two Lake County men and a juvenile were arrested Monday after they attempted to flee police in a stolen car, only to have their escape foiled by the vehicle's anti-theft device, authorities said.

The arrests came after Lake County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 12900 block of West Wakefield Drive near Beach Park at 5:45 a.m. Monday for a person reporting that a 2013 Buick Verano was stolen overnight.

Deputies later located the vehicle with three people inside near Sunset Avenue and North Green Bay Road in Waukegan, sheriff's police said Tuesday.

When deputies attempted to pull over the car, the driver tried to drive away, authorities said. However, the car is equipped with an OnStar device, and OnStar personnel were able to remotely disable the vehicle, preventing its escape.

Driver Jose L. Borjon, 24, of the 2500 block of West Atlantic Avenue in Waukegan, and the juvenile were taken into custody at the scene. Arturo Torres, 22, of the 600 block of Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan, was captured by deputies following a short foot chase, authorities said.

Borjon is charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding, and various traffic citations. He remains held in Lake County jail on $200,000 bail, and is due back in court March 28.

Torres is charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass to motor vehicle. He also was wanted on an arrest warrant for failure to register as a sex offender in Waukegan, sheriff's police said. He remains held in Lake County jail on $200,000 bail and is due back in court Wednesday.

The juvenile has been petitioned to the Hulse Juvenile Detention Center near Vernon Hills on charges of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle.
