Wheaton native advances on 'The Voice'

She's every woman!

Wheaton native and University of Illinois veterinary student Micah Tryba successfully auditioned on NBC's "The Voice" Monday night, singing "I'm Every Woman," by Chaka Khan (also a hit for Whitney Houston).

Both Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani wanted to select Tryba on their teams, but she decided to "go with her gut" and chose Team Blake.

"Micah has an incredible voice," Shelton said. "I think she's gonna be one of those artists that everyone's gonna love."

The 24-year-old Wheaton North High School alumna opened Monday night's show. She was shown working with different animals at school in Champaign-Urbana, singing with the school's coed a cappella group No Comment.

She also spoke about how her beloved Golden Retriever's cancer battle inspired her to study animal science, and that financial struggles landed her back in community college for a while. But her passion was always singing, so she put vet school on hold.

After Tryba finished her 90-second audition, she wept.

All four celebrity judges praised her singing. Adam Levine described her voice as "powerful." Alicia Keys said it was "beautiful" and "gorgeous." Stefani applauded her vocal intuition, sensitivity, control and tenderness.

"The Voice" airs at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Last season on "The Voice," West Dundee resident Riley Elmore advanced to the Top 20.
