Elmhurst man wins $200,000 Lotto prize

An Elmhurst man won $200,000 when he bought a $1 Lucky Day Lotto Quick Pick and matched all five numbers, Illinois Lottery officials said Tuesday.

William Hayes had just filled his gas tank and was heading into the Thorntons at 250 E. Roosevelt Road in Villa Park when his wife suggested buying a lottery ticket. The ticket he purchased matched the five numbers - 2-11-22-38-42 - in the Jan. 24 evening drawing.

Hayes said he discovered his win the night of the drawing when he checked his numbers on the lottery's website.

He told lottery officials he buys one or two tickets a month, "but I really never expected to win a big prize." He said he and his wife plan to "spend a little and save the rest."

The retailer received a $2,000 bonus, or 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.

Lucky Day Lotto drawings are twice a day, seven days a week. For details, visit illinoislottery.com.
