$1 million bail set for two in drug-induced homicide case

Two men facing charges in connection with the January drug overdose death of an Addison man were ordered held on $1 million bail over the weekend, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

Jackie Dunklin, 25, of Glen Ellyn, and Kevin Jaap, 32, of Addison, were each charged with drug-induced homicide and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, officials said.

They are accused of supplying a fatal heroin, cocaine and fentanyl mixture to James Maulding, who died Jan. 1 from a drug overdose.

It was not immediately clear who is providing legal representation for the two.

Addison police were dispatched about 9 a.m. that day to Lorraine Avenue, where Maulding was found dead, authorities said. A woman also suffering from an overdose was taken to the hospital, where she underwent treatment for six weeks.

An investigation led by Addison police later determined Dunklin and Jaap likely supplied the fatal drug mixture, the state's attorney's office said. Dunklin was taken into custody Feb. 6, and Jaap was taken into custody Friday.

"This is a very sad case of a young man who lost his life to heroin," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "The filing of charges against these two men sends the message to these poison peddlers that there is a price to pay for supplying these dangerous drugs, and that price could be up to 30 years of freedom."

Dunklin's next court date is scheduled for Feb. 28, and Jaap's is March 13. Both will appear before Judge Robert Miller.
