Police: Round Lake Heights man killed in motorcycle crash was handing phone to passenger
A 45-year-old Round Lake Heights man was handing a cellphone to a passenger on his motorcycle Tuesday when the vehicle swerved and hit a curb in Fox Lake, killing him and injuring his passenger, authorities said Wednesday.
Mark Dittmer was not wearing a helmet when he and the 42-year-old female passenger were thrown from the motorcycle, Fox Lake Police Chief Russell Laine said.
Police and fire departments responded at 5:09 p.m. to the crash at Rollins Road near Elm Avenue. When officials arrived, they found Dittmer unconscious in the bike path just off Rollins Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, a 42-year-old Round Lake Heights woman, suffered minor injuries, Laine said.
Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said an official cause of death is unknown right now.
The crash remains under investigation by the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County, Laine said.
