State police to investigate Elgin man's death at Kane jail; foul play not expected

Illinois state police are investigating the Tuesday morning death of an Elgin man being held at the Kane County jail on charges of drug delivery and home invasion.

There were no signs of foul play in the death of Alan Span, 48, the Kane County sheriff's office said in a news release.

Detainees at the jail told guards one of their cellmates was having a medical emergency, the department said. Corrections staff members and on-site medical personnel immediately responded, but lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and Span was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. at the jail.

State police will investigate because Span's death occurred while in the county's custody.

Span had been at the jail since July 2016 on charges of home invasion and delivery of a controlled substance.
