GOP mounts assault on critical programs
One of the better letters in the "Opinion" section of the Herald was Mark Hellner's letter of Dec. 30, wherein he accurately and appropriately criticized Trump's election as a long-term, existential mistake for America.
I believe one of the basics Mr. Hellner could have gone on to describe was Trump's and the Republican party's eternal crusade to eliminate Americans' basic health care provisions, like Medicaid and the House speaker's assault to reduce, curtail or eliminate Medicare (How many of us alive today would be here if there was no effective Medicare or Medicaid program?), and, of course, "Obamacare"?
Add to that the ongoing Republican rampage against the most basic, lifesaving and life-giving programs the nation has survived on, like the food stamp act and, the most essential benefit the nation has ever enjoyed, Social Security, truly, Americans' one true, lasting blessing. They'll never give up the attack to reduce Social Security.
Trump and his party will move heaven and earth to replace these benefits with their favorite programs, you know, like more atom-bomb silos and bombers and nuclear submarines, and, of course, one superstrong, super tall 'wall', on the border with Mexico.
What kind of a party would pursue those goals? What kind of a president would support them?
