Toure gets 18-month ban for drunk-driving
MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been banned from driving for 18 months after admitting to drunk-driving, despite saying he hadn't "intentionally consumed alcohol."
Toure, who was arrested in east London on Nov. 28, appeared in court on Monday. He was also fined 54,000 pounds ($70,000).
The 33-year-old Toure is a Muslim and said Tuesday in a statement on his Facebook page that he has "always refused alcohol."
The former Ivory Coast international said "as I was above the permitted limit when tested on the night, I decided not to challenge the charge. However, it was important to me that I told the court that I had not intentionally consumed alcohol."
Toure added that "the judge in his sentencing remarks accepted that I had not been intentionally drinking."
