Children to go on shopping spree with Navy

Submitted by Waukegan Township

On Dec. 17, more than 100 local children will participate in the annual Waukegan Township and Shawall Temple Children's Shopping Spree.

This program allows children to enjoy a full day of activities, including shopping, games, pizza and interaction with the U.S. Navy, not to mention an opportunity to make new friends.

The spree also allows underprivileged children from Waukegan and North Chicago to spend a day with Great Lakes Navy personal, Top Teens of America, the Top Ladies of Distinction, and the Shawall temple members.

"It's a privilege every year to help so many kids for the holiday season. This year the children will give back by creating holiday cards to be sent to servicemen and servicewomen not able to be home with their own families during the holidays," Waukegan Township Supervisor Patricia Jones said.

Investing in the Next Generation is the theme for the Waukegan Township Youth Programs. By encouraging children to give back, they will receive a "sense of purpose."

After shopping, children will visit People's Choice Fun Center, where they will play games and enjoy pizza.

The day concludes back at Park Place, with a visit from Santa, and each child receives a toy provided by Toys For Tots.

This year's volunteers will consist of United States Navy military personnel, Top Teens America, members of the Artis Yancey HBCU Tour committee and attendees as Waukegan Township staff members. Each person will volunteer their time to make the event a success.
