Music, tree decorating part of tree-lighting ceremony in Des Plaines

Des Plaines held its annual tree-lighting ceremony Friday evening, one of several in the Northwest suburbs.

The event started about 4 p.m., when students and organizations decorate holiday trees provided by the Des Plaines Optimist Club. Santa arrived about 4:30 p.m. with the annual poster contest winners. The tree lighting was about 6:30 p.m.

The event included a performance by the Maine West High School Band and special guest appearances by the Minions. A Mitten Tree sought donations of new hats, gloves, mittens and scarves, and the Des Plaines Self-Help Closet & Food Pantry collected food items. The Artistry in Motion Dance Troupe, Salvation Army Band and Maine West High School Choraliers also performed.
