Chicago man sentenced for possessing stolen car

A Chicago man who sped away during a traffic stop by Palatine police pleaded guilty Monday to possession of a stolen car.

In exchange for his guilty plea, Tomas Arzuaga, 21, was sentenced to four years in prison, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Gerber.

Officers stopped Arzuaga about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 19 for a malfunctioning license plate light. After learning the car was stolen, an officer - who recognized Arzuaga - ordered him to shut off the engine. Instead, Arzuaga sped away, driving south on Route 53 at more than 95 miles per hour, authorities said.

Chicago police arrested Arzuaga at his home several days later.

At the time of his arrest, Arzuaga was on parole for a 2014 conviction for possessing a stolen vehicle, prosecutors said.
