Hossa too hot to handle as Hawks douse Flames 3-2

Six players in the NHL have scored 10 goals this season.

One of them plays for the Blackhawks, but his name isn't Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Artemi Panarin or Artem Anisimov.

No, that player is the suddenly ageless Marian Hossa, who not only notched his 10th goal Friday, but did it in dramatic fashion with just 2:23 remaining in a 3-2 Blackhawks win at Calgary.

“You know when you have a hot stick, good things happen and you just try to put the puck at the net,” Hossa said after the game.

Well, consider Hossa's stick officially ablaze as 9 of his 10 scores have come in the last 11 games.

Panarin set up the game-winner when he showed good patience in the offensive zone, then fired a shot that Flames goalie Chad Johnson managed to deflect with his left shoulder. The Hawks caught a break when the puck went straight up in the air, giving Hossa a chance to swoop in and tap it home.

“I saw there was a rebound coming over his head,” Hossa said. “I don't think the goalie knew exactly where the puck was. …

“I tried to just hook (the defender's) stick so he doesn't touch the puck, and the puck just bounced pretty much close to the goal. Then I tried to put it underneath me (and) in the net.”

Ryan Hartman and Brent Seabrook also scored for the Hawks (12-4-2), who are 1-1 on their seven-game road trip.

Corey Crawford was sensational in the net, making 28 saves, plenty of which were high-danger chances. Crawford's final save came with 2.4 seconds left when he blocked a redirect of a Mark Giordano shot from the point.

Other than Hossa, the only other players with double-digit goals are Winnipeg's Patrik Laine (12) and Mark Scheifele (10), Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby (11), the Rangers' Michael Grabner (11) and Boston's David Pastrnak (10). All of them are under 30 years old, with Laine checking in at 18 and Pastrnak at 20.

“He's scored some goals from right around that net this year to get us a point or two,” Quenneville said of the 37-year-old Hossa. “Tonight's another illustration of how important he's been for us.”

Hartman gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead 7:42 into the first period when he took a stretch pass from Anisimov, held off Flames D-man Dennis Wideman and snapped a shot past Johnson. Hartman, who was scratched Tuesday in Winnipeg, now has 3 goals on the season.

“What a great shot,” Quenneville said. “Nice to see him score. I thought he did some other good things in the game as well.”

The Flames stormed back to take a 2-1 lead on second-period goals by Sam Bennett (at 3:33) and Sean Monahan (at 7:03), but Seabrook tied the game with a power-play goal at 14:34 of the second. It was just the Hawks' third PP goal in the last eight games.

Calgary, meanwhile, went 0-for-5 with the extra man, meaning the Hawks have killed off 31 of their last 34 penalties.

Said Quenneville: “A lot of nights special teams can win you games. Tonight was a good example.”
