Elgin man accused of burglary

An Elgin man has been charged with residential burglary after he broke into an Elgin home last week and stole guns, electronics and jewelry, Cook County prosecutors said Thursday.

Officers responded to a call just before 3 p.m. Friday about a burglary on the 300 block of Waverly Drive. A window screen had been ripped and the glass window pushed open, prosecutors said during a bond hearing Thursday.

Stolen were an AK 47 rifle, two handguns, an iPad, a laptop, a cellphone and jewelry.

After an investigation, Chefonne L. Montgomery, 22, of 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, was identified as the thief, police said. Prosecutors said they were led to Montgomery after his grandmother saw a picture of him with the guns and alerted police. Serial numbers on the guns matched those taken from the burglarized home, prosecutors said.

Montgomery was charged with one count of felony residential burglary. He was also on probation for a previous aggravated battery conviction in Kane County. A Cook County judge set bail at $120,000 Thursday.
