Mount Prospect police search for armed robbery suspect

Mount Prospect police released an image Wednesday of a man they say robbed a village convenience store at gunpoint Tuesday morning.

The robbery occurred about 8:40 a.m. when the man walked into El Amigo Carniceria, 403 E. Euclid Ave., pointed a handgun at the cashier and demanded money. The man received an undisclosed amount of cash, then left the store and fled in a red or burgundy sedan, possibly a Nissan Maxima.

The cashier was not injured and no customers were in the store at the time of the robbery.

Police said the robber was described as being possibly black or Hispanic, standing about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a black winter hat, a black mask that covered the lower half of his face, a black jacket and a light-colored shirt.

Officer Greg Sill said after the robber left, the cashier locked the front door, something that the police ask businesses to do so the robber can't return, but did not report the crime until 9:12 a.m.

Sill said police have been running down leads and hope someone will recognize the robber and provide police with information leading to his capture.
