Prosecutors: Mount Prospect man fired weapon to celebrate Cubs win

A Mount Prospect man who authorities say fired a rifle to celebrate the Chicago Cubs' World Series win was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

Police received a call early Thursday about shots fired on the 400 block of See Gwun Avenue, Cook County assistant state's attorney Alyssa Grissom said.

Police spoke with Zachary Reed, 19, who was at the home with four other men, Grissom said. Reed admitted firing an AR 15 rifle four times into the ground after the Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians Wednesday night, Grissom said. Police recovered the weapon from a bedroom closet.

While police were investigating, a neighbor told officers he heard a gunshot on July 3, 2016, and observed Reed firing a weapon into the ground, Grissom said. The neighbor recorded the incident on video and turned the video over to police, she said, adding a relative of Reed's corroborated the July 3 shooting.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo placed Reed on electronic monitoring and imposed a $40,000 bail.

If convicted of the felony, Reed faces up to three years in prison. Probation is also an option.

He next appears in court on Nov. 28.
