Former cable technician sentenced for stealing gun from Palatine home

A former cable company technician was sentenced to 12 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to stealing a gun from a home in Palatine.

Andre Cummings Jr., 23, pleaded guilty Tuesday to residential burglary and theft, court records show. He admitted taking a handgun from the Palatine home, where he responded to a service call in October 2015. Cummings took the .40 caliber handgun from a bedroom dresser, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the weapon was recovered on March 14, following a shootout with Chicago police in which Cummings was not involved.

The aspiring rapper told police he took the gun because he wanted to use it in a music video, prosecutors said during Cummings' bond hearing. Cummings told police someone stole the gun from his car in December 2015.

Cummings received credit for 174 days in custody. He must complete at least 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
