6 years in prison for 2015 South Elgin scissors attack, attempted murder

A South Elgin woman has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to a December 2015 attack in which police said she stabbed a man 12 times with scissors.

Heather A. Baltes, 25, of the 700 block of Dean Drive, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of attempted murder in exchange for prosecutors dismissing less severe charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to Kane County court records.

Baltes was arrested Dec. 27, 2015, by South Elgin police, who said she stabbed a man in the head, back and neck after an argument.

Baltes was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in South Elgin in July 2009, and pleaded guilty the next month to a reduced charge of battery, along with 12 months of probation.

That probation was revoked and she was sentenced to 304 days in jail after an arrest in August 2009 on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, records show.

Baltes also served 44 days in jail after an October 2010 conviction for violating an order of protection, records show.

Baltes must serve 85 percent of her attempted murder sentence and gets credit for 301 days served at the Kane County jail.

Judge D.J. Tegeler accepted the guilty plea.
