Fast food equipment maker to expand in Carol Stream

Carol Stream-based Antunes, a manufacturer of food service equipment for McDonald's, Wendy's and others, plans to expand its headquarters by late next year.

The company plans to add 55,000 square feet, doubling the size of its engineering lab and sheet metal fabrication area. It also will construct a water treatment lab, the company announced Wednesday.

The company is also adding an on-site medical clinic for employees and converting to an open office concept.

"As an industry leader, we are committed to having the operational capabilities to keep up with our customers' growing needs," Antunes CEO Glenn Bullock said in a statement. "This expansion not only allows us to reconfigure our manufacturing layout to increase capacity, but also gives us more resources to expand our product lines in order to provide solutions to our existing and potential customers."

In April, the company changed its name from A.J. Antunes & Co. to Antunes. Bullock's father-in-law was Augie Antunes, who with another partner started the company in 1955. A.J. Antunes's biggest client was Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's, who needed equipment for his growing restaurant chain. As McDonald's later expanded to Europe and Asia, Antunes followed with all the food service equipment.

Antunes is in about 140 countries with about 250 workers in Carol Stream, another 60 workers in China and more in offices in Switzerland, Florida, Colorado and New Hampshire. Besides McDonald's, the company also supplies equipment to Wendy's, Burger King, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, Sonic and other major chains.

A spokeswoman for the company could not say if the expansion would lead to an increase in the workforce or how much the expansion would cost.
