Gas line struck in Elgin

It took nine hours Tuesday for crews to repair a gas line struck by a contractor doing work on Elgin's west side, authorities said.

The six-inch gas line was severed about 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Congressional Parkway and Tournament Drive, where crews were working on a construction project, according to Elgin Fire Department Captain Dick Cummings.

After working much of the day, crews were able to fix the leak by 6:30 p.m., Cummings said.

The fire department kept a fire engine at the scene as a precaution until the line could be repaired, he said.
