Flashing lights on Central only add to danger

Last night, driving the speed limit east on Central Road in the dark and rain, I was within 50-75 feet of the crosswalk at Melas Park. Suddenly the double yellow lights began to flash. Not having been down Central since the lights were installed I didn't know in the instant what was going on or how I should react.

In the dark and rain they were very bright and with the rain created glare. I saw no pedestrians, so continued east in a hyper-aware mode. The auto to my left, however, slammed on the brakes and skidded to a complete stop right at the crosswalk striping.

As I traveled past this car I saw why. A man walking his bike had entered the crosswalk. Westbound cars were not as close to the crosswalk and had time to safely stop for the pedestrian.

The yellow lights, I presume, are there to warn drivers to slow down and be aware of pedestrians - but not to expect drivers to come to a complete stop in the middle of Central. The driver on my left thought he was supposed to stop - if there had been a car behind him there might have been an accident.

It was a confusing situation and everyone involved, including the pedestrian, seemed to make choices based on what they could see, and not from a clear understanding of the signaling.

The engineering at the crossing could easily create another unfortunate accident, and this should be cleared up ASAP. Although it wouldn't be popular with pedestrians I suggest a fence along the sidewalk on the Melas side of Central, and close the crosswalk. Force pedestrians to walk one block west to the signal at Busse where there will be no confusion, no sight issues in the dark or rain, or other lack of clarity. This will ensure safety for all.
