Students at a Naperville school heard yesterday from a famous person they know as an author, but their parents know as an actor. Jamie Lee Curtis read aloud her most recent children's book, “This Is Me: A Story of Who We Are & Where We Came From,” to about 200 kids at Longwood Elementary School before a book signing at Anderson's Bookshop in downtown Naperville. Union claims unsafe working conditions at Lake County jail

Union leaders for Lake County jail employees said yesterday that staffing shortages and mandated overtime are making for unsafe working conditions at the jail. Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose countered by saying that current employees not showing up to work creates a bigger problem than being short-staffed. Full story.

Man, brother-in-law sentenced in fraud case

A Des Plaines man was taken into custody yesterday after he and his brother-in-law pleaded guilty last week to defrauding the state of more than $450,000 in sales tax from their Crystal Lake gas stations, officials said. Full story.

Elgin man sentenced to prison for 8th DUI

A 45-year-old Elgin man pleaded guilty to his eighth DUI and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Hoffman Estates police arrested Joseph Martinez on July 15 after receiving a call about a reckless driver near Sutton and Golf roads. Police stopped Martinez based on the description of the car. He had bloodshot eyes, slurred his speech and smelled of alcohol, prosecutors said. Full story.

Vote nears on Geneva places-for-eating tax

Restaurants in Geneva might pay a 2 percent tax starting Jan. 1 as city officials plan to enact a places-for-eating tax. Aldermen are expected to vote on the measure Oct. 3. Earlier this week they supported it 9-1 at a committee meeting. City administrators calculate the tax could generate as much as $1.5 million a year. Full story.

No official cause of death yet for Willowbrook High School student

Flowers and white votive candles have turned what Willowbrook High School students call “the rock” into a memorial for one of their classmates. Abdul Jalal, 15, died Monday afternoon after suffering an undisclosed medical emergency in the school's cafeteria. DuPage High School District 88 spokeswoman Dani Brink would not comment on what he was doing in the moments before the emergency, but has said staff members quickly responded and called paramedics. Cardinals series means something for Cubs

This weekend, the Cubs will welcome their Gateway Arch rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, to Wrigley Field for a big three-game series. They say they'll go all out against the Cardinals, who entered Thursday tied with the Giants and Mets for the two wild-card spots. Each team had 80-72 records, but only two wild cards advance to the single-game playoff. Full story.
