Elgin man sentenced to prison for 8th DUI

A 45-year-old Elgin man pleaded guilty to his eighth DUI and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Hoffman Estates police arrested Joseph Martinez on July 15 after receiving a call about a reckless driver near Sutton and Golf roads. Police stopped Martinez based on the description of the car. He had bloodshot eyes, slurred his speech and smelled of alcohol, prosecutors said.

Breathalyzer results indicated a blood alcohol level of .14, nearly double the legal limit of .08.

At the time of his arrest, Martinez had three felony and four misdemeanor DUI convictions, according to prosecutors. He was facing up to 30 years in prison.

Martinez, who entered his guilty plea last week, received credit for 62 days in custody.
