300 students participate in Stanton School service project

Three hundred students from Stanton School in Fox Lake participated in the annual Day of Service Friday.

Students collected donations and offered to perform projects in the community. Nearly $23,000 was collected, including donations from 12 organizations and business sponsors.

The 150 students who collected donations were eligible to travel to the 16 project sites. Locations included Camp Henry Horner, YMCA Camp Duncan, both in Ingleside, Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville, the Fox Lake American Legion Hall, and the Fox Lake police and fire departments.

Another 150 students worked at the school.

Principal Jeff Sefcik said he wants the students to know the needs of their community.

"We are trying to teach them that if you work in your community, you're proud of your community and your community is proud, it's a great place to be and live," Sefcik said.

He added the monetary donations are good, but time, effort and sweat are just as important. Sefcik said if $20,000 was raised, he would let students duct tape him to a wall. Since that goal was met, the taping takes place Monday.

Funds raised benefit the district's PTA and will be used for assemblies, field trips and equipment purchases.
