Boys golf: Garmoe, Prospect meet Barrington's challenge

A sterling finish from senior Robert Garmoe on Thursday helped lead Prospect to 2 important wins in Mid-Suburban League boys golf.

After a tough start, Garmoe played 1-over on the final six holes as the Knights shot 156 to defeat defending MSL champion Barrington (158) and Palatine (170) in a battle of heavyweights at Mount Prospect Golf Club.

"I bogeyed the first three holes," said Garmoe, a two-time state qualifier, "but I hung in there."

Nick Tenuta, one of five seniors in the Prospect starting six, took honors with a 37.

"We've just been playing solid golf when we've needed to," said Tenuta, "especially in the clutch."

Charlie Busch, a sophomore, fired 39 for the Knights, while 38's from Tom Calbi and Jack Markham paced Barrington's win.

Sean Dolan carded 40 for the Broncos, while Rohan Devaguptapu led Palatine with a 41 from the No. 6 spot.

Brad Woodle finished out the scoring for Prospect with a 41.

"It's been good so far this year," said Garmoe. "We're undefeated in the MSL (the Knights improved to 8-0 with the victories). We've just got to keep improving so that we're playing our best golf at the end of the season, when it matters most."

"I'm proud of the guys," said Knights coach Tom Martindale. "Barrington is a very good golf team and I've got nothing but respect for their coach (Mike Kallenbach) and their program, and great players like Tim (Lim) and Tom (Calbi) - we've had quite a dose of them over the years."
