Firefighter injured in vacant warehouse fire in Elgin

One firefighter suffered minor injuries Wednesday in a large fire at an empty warehouse in Elgin, authorities said.

The Elgin Fire Department was called at 6:45 p.m. to the 800 block of Raymond Street for a report of smoke showing from the roof of the two-story structure, authorities said. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames billowing out multiple windows and the roof of the warehouse.

The injured firefighter was treated and released from Advocate Sherman Hospital.

A demolition company was brought in to demolish a portion of the building to allow firefighters to fully extinguish the blaze, which was under control in about four hours, authorities said.

Fourteen Elgin fire units were assisted by multiple neighboring fire departments.

The building had been vacant for many years and the current owner was preparing to demolish the entire facility this winter, authorities said.
