Wauconda celebrates victories, soggy sinkings at Cardboard Boat races

Part of the Labor Day weekend celebration on Bangs Lake in Wauconda involves soggy cardboard and lots of duct tape.

Saturday marked the 15th annual Labor Day Cardboard Boat Races, with a full day of fun and excitement as kids, adults, families, clubs, organizations and businesses competed for prizes and bragging rights.

The races took place at Lindy's Restaurant and Marina with the goals of crafting vessels that look good and don't sink.

Prizes, trophies and awards were handed out at the end of the races to those finishing first, second and third in the various racing categories. Judges also selected the Best Dressed, Best Spectacular Sinking, Best Team Spirit and Best Design & Theme.

The coveted "Cardboard Cup" is awarded to the winner of the business category to be displayed for the coming year.

The event is held annually to raise funds for the Bangs Lake Advisory Committee, which maintains and restores Bangs Lake.
