Long-awaited Comet ice cream opens in Rolling Meadows

Comet, the long-awaited ice cream shop in downtown Rolling Meadows, is now open.

Owner Craig Carlson, who bought the shop's site at 3001 Kirchoff Road in 2014, has spent the last two years remodeling the vacant building at the southwest corner of Kirchoff Road and Meadow Drive that used to house Ray's Auto.

When Carlson first got approval from the city, he said he planned to make Comet an old-fashioned gathering space for town events, with a drive-through lane and outdoor seating.

The menu includes ice cream sundaes, frozen custard, concretes and coffee.

The new business is a bright spot along Kirchoff Road where several closed businesses have left holes in the city's downtown for years. Recently the city council voted against a senior housing developer that wanted to move into the former Dominick's property nearby.
