Chemical leak sickens 14 in Sugar Grove

Fourteen people were taken to hospitals Monday morning after a chemical gas leak in a Sugar Grove business caused respiratory problems, fire officials said.

Sugar Grove firefighters responded to a call at 8:20 a.m. for a chemical release at industrial chemical distributor Producers Chemical, 1960 Bucktail Lane, said Battalion Chief Mike Warner.

Eight of those employees were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, while six others went to Mercy in Aurora with what firefighters called "minor respiratory issues."

A hazardous materials team and more than 10 fire departments were on the scene for 2½ hours before the business was turned over to the property owner and a cleanup company.

Assisting departments were: North Aurora, Elburn, Big Rock, Little Rock Fox, Montgomery, Geneva, Batavia, Maple Park, St. Charles, Aurora, Hinkley and Bristol Kendal.

The cause of the leak remains under investigation.
