Archbishop of Mexico City to say Mass Sunday in Des Plaines

Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, the archbishop of Mexico City, will celebrate Mass at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines.

The cardinal will be honored during the Mass for his 50 years as a priest. It's the first time he is visiting the shrine, which is the only location outside of the Basilica in Mexico City that the church allows pilgrims to satisfy their mandas, or promises, to the Virgin Mary for considering their wishes.

The annual Dec. 12 feast day celebration attracts tens of thousands of worshippers to the shrine at 1170 N. River Road.

Sunday's Mass will also be celebrated by Chicago Archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop John Manz.
