Perseid viewing party at Cantigny canceled

Adler Planetarium and Cantigny Park in Wheaton have canceled their Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party planned for Cantigny on Friday because of weather.

Citing storm predictions and complete cloud cover, officials have called off the event and are offering full refunds.

Astronomers expect this year's Perseid meteor shower to be a dazzling one, featuring up to four times as much activity as usual. The peak of the annual show begins early Friday morning and continues through Saturday night.

Though the meteor shower won't be visible in the suburbs Friday because of the weather, Adler is offering the following tips to catch it before Aug. 24:

• Seek out a wide-open area for the best viewing, away from city lights.

• Avoid trees and buildings that could block your view.

• Give your eyes at least 15 minutes to adjust to the dark and face away from any bright lights.

Perseid meteor shower should be quite a show
