Chicago White Sox's Anderson gets game off to rest sore hand

All things considered, Tim Anderson knows he's lucky.

"Yeah, it's kind of scary," said the Chicago White Sox's rookie shortstop. "I was able to get past the first game, so that was a good thing."

In his 47th game with the Sox, at Detroit on Thursday, Anderson had to make an early exit after Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann hit him with a pitch on the left hand.

Anderson was not in the lineup Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles at U.S. Cellular Field.

"I feel a lot better today, it's just a little sore," Anderson said. "It was really bad yesterday. I was very sore."

In Tuesday's game at Detroit, center fielder Charlie Tilson made his major-league debut with the White Sox after being acquired from the Cardinals in a Sunday trade that sent reliever Zach Duke to St. Louis.

He singled in his first at-bat, but Tilson later torn his left hamstring trying to run down a Miguel Cabrera flyball. The New Trier High School grad had season-ending surgery Thursday.

Prospects Kevan Smith, Jason Coats and Matt Davidson also were injured right before or during their first games with the White Sox this season.

Anderson might be back in the Sox's lineup Saturday, but he also can use the break after hitting .230 and posting an identical .230 on-base percentage over his last 14 games.

"There's another part of it where he just gets a little time off," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think that can help him, too. The injury is more why he's not playing. There is a double meaning to it that he can get a little rest and get back after it once he feels good."

Putnam update:

Relief pitcher Zach Putnam had surgery Thursday to remove a bone fragment from his pitching (right) elbow. According to the White Sox, there was no ligament damage.

Putnam last pitched for the Sox on June 20, when he faced three hitters at Boston and issued 3 walks.

Prospect watch:

Relief pitcher Zach Burdi, drafted No. 26 overall in June out of Louisville, has been on a roll with Class AA Birmingham.

Over his last five games for the Barons, the Downers Grove native has pitched 8⅓ scoreless innings and struck out 12.

Alec Hansen, drafted by the White Sox on the second round, has a 2.18 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 20⅔ innings in his first 6 pro starts, split between the Arizona League White Sox and Advanced Rookie Great Falls.
