Promontory in neighborhood profile

In the 1980s, the Promontory subdivision in Long Grove was the site of the Parade of Homes, a showcase where visitors toured builders' model homes to view the newest building trends.

Today, the neighborhood has a gracious feel with a variety of custom homes, including the former models, in a beautiful country setting, said Sheryl Graff, real estate broker with @Properties in Barrington.

"The neighborhood features a lot of natural beauty, and many homes back to ponds and conservancy areas. It's classic Long Grove with one-acre lots and no sidewalks," Graff said. "Homes feature first-floor masters, open plans and vaulted or cathedral ceilings, which were unusual features in the late '80s when these homes were built."

One of Graff's listings is a home that has an Arizona feel with a two-story kitchen, vaulted ceilings, skylights and back staircase that opens up to the kitchen. A ladder brings you to a third floor loft that oversees the home below.

Situated on Port Clinton Road off Route 83 and north of Route 22, Promontory offers one-of-a-kind homes from French Country to contemporary designs, some secluded among the trees, and most updated with the latest amenities and luxury appointments.

Nancy Ali and her husband, Kulbir Thukral, moved to Promontory 2½ years ago after living in the North Shore for 18 years.

Looking to live closer to Ali's office in Schaumburg, the couple looked at a lot of houses, but kept coming back to the residence in Promontory, Ali said. "We liked that the lots were large, but not crazy huge, so there was still a sense of community.

"The first year, we hosted a summer gathering to meet our neighbors, and it was nice that so many people came. People here are very nice and friendly; it's nice to step out and see our wonderful neighbors walking their dogs and waving.

"Our home feels like a Colorado lodge. Instead of downsizing, we went from 3,000 to almost 5,000 square feet. We updated the whole house when we moved in, and it has a massive kitchen that is wonderful for entertaining, and we host a lot of events."

The couple's home is a great place to hang out and look at the pond, which is soothing and relaxing with a lovely weeping willow tree and surrounded by conservancy, Ali said. "It feels like home."

Promontory sits near an elementary school, Stevenson High School and the Prairie View train station. It is close to highways I-294 and Route 53. For Ali, who travels a lot, easy access to O'Hare International Airport is a big plus.

For shopping, residents can head to Hawthorne Mall in Vernon Hills and other surrounding towns. "We have access to so many communities," Ali said. "I love the little villages."

For recreation, the Long Grove Park District offers several sports, including soccer and golf, and a variety of activities. For a small fee, residents also have access to all the Buffalo Grove Park District offerings, which may be more convenient to the Promontory subdivision.

The neighborhood has an informal association where residents take care of the common areas and landscaping.

Long Grove's charming historic district with its shops, restaurants, art and entertainment attracts visitors from miles around. The village is also well known for its annual food-themed festivals.
