Bland's mother at DNC: Black life cut short 'a national loss'

The mother of former Naperville woman Sandra Bland led a group of mothers who lost children to violence that drew applause and chants of "black lives matter" last night at the Democratic National Convention. "I am here with Hillary Clinton tonight because she is a leader and a mother who will say our children's names," Geneva Reed-Veal said. It was the same night Clinton triumphantly captured the Democratic nomination for president, the first woman ever to lead a major political party in the race for the White House.

Redacted report sheds little light on Sandack resignation

Downers Grove police yesterday released a heavily redacted report about an ongoing investigation into an "internet scam" reported by recently resigned state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove. Prosecutors: Woman ran down boyfriend after argument over infidelity

A 20-year-old LaGrange woman is being accused of running over her boyfriend with his vehicle in Lombard. Prosecutors say Elizabeth Donatelli and her boyfriend had been arguing over infidelity issues Saturday in a car he was driving. He pulled the car over and began walking away, but Donatelli jumped in the driver's seat and ran him down, authorities said. Full story.

Fight over drugs leads to Zion stabbing, police say

An argument over drugs led to a fatal stabbing at a Zion gas station on Monday night, police said yesterday. Bernardino Giustino, 21, of Zion, was charged yesterday afternoon with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 20-year-old Nathaniel Lang, also of Zion. Full story.

Man rescued from ditch after Elk Grove Village crash

A driver was rescued from a water-filled ditch after colliding with another car yesterday in Elk Grove Village, authorities said. Firefighters extended a ladder into the ditch and were able to help the man out of his Mercedes, which landed upright about 10:30 a.m. near Busse Road and Mark Street. Full story.

Streamwood woman gets 6 years for Medicare fraud

The head of a Schaumburg home health care company was sentenced yesterday to six years in prison for fraudulently billing Medicare for unnecessary services, officials said. As the manager of Suburban Home Physicians, Diana Jocelyn Gumila of Streamwood directed employees to perform in-home visits with patients who were physically capable of leaving their residences and not in need of in-home treatment, federal prosecutors said. James Shields allowed four singles and struck out five in route to the White Sox's fourth straight win since ace Chris Sale's suspension, in a 3-0 win over the Cubs last night. Jose Abreu had two hits, including an RBI single in the first off Kyle Hendricks (9-7) that ended his streak of 22 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.
