Educator appointed to vacant seat on Lisle village board

A 14-year resident with a background in education has been selected to fill a vacancy on the Lisle village board.

Trustees this week unanimously approved the appointment of Christy McGovern to the six-member board. She will complete the remaining term of former Trustee Rob Getz, who resigned last week.

“I know that my new role as trustee will be demanding and challenging, but I feel that my service will be extremely rewarding, interesting and exciting,” McGovern said in a statement. “I would most like to see our downtown flourish and our residents be proud of their community.”

Mayor Joseph Broda said he reached out to McGovern in early June after learning Getz was going to step down.

McGovern was one of several residents Broda spoke to about filling the seat until the April election.

Broda has known McGovern for at least five years.

On Wednesday, Broda said McGovern will be a great addition to the board.

“Her background and qualifications are exactly what we were looking for in a replacement,” said Broda, adding that McGovern will provide a different perspective.

He said McGovern is planning to run for the village board seat in the spring.

McGovern is a bilingual educator who has held various positions, mostly teaching Spanish. She also served as a director for an English as a Second Language department.

According to her resume, McGovern taught in three states before moving to Illinois in 2002. She served on the Green Trail Improvement Association from 2009 until 2015, when her family moved to another Lisle neighborhood.

After staying at home to be with her children, McGovern recently accepted a position teaching Spanish to kindergarten through eighth grade students at St. Joseph School in Downers Grove.

McGovern is married with four sons.
