Buffalo Grove Police Remind Residents about Dangers of Social Hosting

The Buffalo Grove Police Department is urging Village residents to remain vigilant when it comes to abiding by the Social Hosting Law. The law dictates that adults are not allowed to host underage drinking parties, even if the gathering is held at a family home.

"Parents and other adults must remember that despite their best intentions, hosting these types of parties is against the law, and could create a horrible circumstance that can permanently affect the lives of not only young people, but their friends and even themselves," said Sergeant Anthony Goldstein.

It is a Class A Misdemeanor in the State of Illinois if an adult hosts a party where alcohol is consumed by individuals under the age of 21 - even if the goal is to keep them 'safe' by ensuring they don't leave the location the party is held.

Whether the gathering is in a hotel room, a boat or any other property that an adult has control over, any such event is against state law. Consequences range from fines of no less than $500, to a Class 4 Felony and possible jail time if a death or injury occurs as a result of this type of party.

However, if an adult takes all of the necessary steps to prevent underage drinking from occurring, or requests assistance from law enforcement when alcohol is discovered, no charges will be filed against them.

The Social Hosting Law became effective on January 1, 2013.
