The four-day Batavia Windmill City Festival kicked off Thursday night and runs through Sunday at the Riverwalk.

Festival hours are noon to 11 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Houston Street and Island Avenue.

One of Friday's highlights is the Windmill Whirl 5K Run and Fun Walk at Mooseheart. People can still register for $20 at signmeup.com or for $30 between 6 and 6:30 p.m. before the race at Batavia Covenant Church, 1314 Main St.

The ice cream eating contest is 2 p.m. Sunday and is expected to draw about 75 participants.

After a fast-moving summer storm passed through, carnival worker Glenn Negler cleaned rain from the deck of the bumper cars Thursday at the Windmill City Festival in Batavia. He has been with Windy City Amusements out of St. Charles for 12 years. "I used to ride the hell out of these things when I was a kid," he said. "Now here I am. God works in mysterious ways."
